My family has always told me I was born talking!
I guess that was my first clue that speaking was something I did incessantly but it was also something I couldn’t stop even when I tried.
I won a speaking contest in grade five and my teacher told me I had a ‘gift’ for speaking in front of an audience. I just thought it was something that everyone could do.
Fast forward to when I got my first job at McDonalds at the age of fifteen; my gift of the gab came in handy when it came time to up sell an apple pie with the Big Mac order. From there I was invited to work for a boutique jean store and I outsold the store manager on my first day.
When I was school President my ability to speak in front of my peers was again a skill that came in handy. Even better I was asked to manage the senior boys’ basketball team and my speaking skills were very welcomed there!
So it seemed almost inevitable that my career would involve speaking in some shape or form. I took a number of communication and leadership courses throughout my career and when I was in banking got promoted every year in the ten years I worked there. I got asked to head up and facilitate the first time homebuyer seminars because no one else wanted to do it- so I did, I loved it and apparently so did the sold out crowds that we had for over two years.
When I was headhunted by a major insurance company they hired me to head up their area and my primary role was to present to banks, realtors and developers so that they would use our insurance services over the competitors. In the two years I was in that role we gained 30% market share.
Then when I headed up a brand new mortgage program for a credit union I presented again to realtors and developers and we booked $10 million dollars of business in ten months- oversold the mortgage portfolio and worked myself out of a job!
That was a turning point or as Dr. Phil would say “a defining moment” because I now had the opportunity to evaluate what I wanted to do and I hired a business coach and started my consulting/speaking practice at the age of 29.
My business coach added me as a consulting partner after one year because I had great results with his consulting clients.
I auditioned and got hired on the spot by a major international seminar company in 1993 and within one year was named in their top 1% of seminar leaders.
I have training and certificates in psychology, communication and leadership and was in leadership positions since the age of 23.
Since 1994 I have been speaking, training and consulting and am the author of 4 books including the latest “101 Ways to Make Generations X, Y and Zoomers Happy at Work”. Over the past fifteen years I have worked with thousands including Fortune 500 companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, Growmark, 3M, Astra Zeneca, Royal Bank, British Telecom and many more.
